Easy DIY Flag Bunting!

I finally did it! I finally used my sewing machine I got for CHRISTMAS and made a cute little bunting for our kitchen! I'm so proud. :)

It was surprisingly easy- even for a sewing machine project. And I say that as a total and complete armature. Literally, this was my first sewing project, ever!

Here are the materials I used:

  • 4 fabric scrap squares from Jo Ann's
  • 5 Feet of thin burlap ribbon
  • Fabri-Tac brand fabric glue
  • Cardboard triangle

These are the fabric scraps I got from Jo Ann's. Aren't they cute?! They come in cute little squares of about 2' x 2' for just $2 each.

I cut out a cardboard triangle in the size of 'flag' that I wanted for my bunting, and then used it to trace onto my fabric and cut two triangles (front and back) for each flag.

Then I laid out the length of ribbon I needed for my space (about 5 feet) and made sure I cut enough triangle flags for the whole length (I organized them in the pattern I wanted at this time, too).

I pinned together my two pieces of fabric for each flag inside out. You can see what I mean in the picture. This is so I could sew the edges and then flip the flags right side out when finished and have a nice clean stitch.

Here I am sewing my edges! I was taught by my wonderful friend, Jill, to always machine sew the corners. You don't want to let those be the last bit you close up... it'll be less pretty.
So I started in the middle on of the sides of my flag and sewed all the way around the perimeter until I was about 2 inches from where I started. (see picture below)

Then I took the whole flag off the sewing machine and shoved a pencil in my 2 inch hole to flip the whole thing right side out.

And here's my right side out, sewed triangle flag! (with a hole in it).

**At this point I got excited and forgot to take pictures. I apologize!**

Here's where that Fabri-Tac glue came in handy. Seriously, you need this brand of glue. I've tried other "Tacky" glues before, but this one actually bonds quickly and holds very well. Ok, enough of my commercial. At this point, I just added a thin line of glue inside the fold of my 2 inch hole and pressed the fabric together for a couple seconds till it held. Super easy.

I did this with all of my triangles then used the Fabri-Tac glue again to adhere them to my burlap ribbon.

And voila! I hung it in my kitchen :)
