I made this cute little bow tie for my handsome husband as a Valentine's Day gift. He rocked it like a champ.
It was surprisingly very simple to make and I only used items I already had on hand at home! And I did NOT use a sewing machine (although maybe someone who knows what they're doing would have??).
In case you're interested in making one of your own, here's how I did it:
::: I started with a thrifted skirt (always the best) that had a nice herringbone pattern I liked, and I cut out a rectangle. You can make the rectangle whatever size you like depending on how big you want your bow tie to be. My fabric was also pretty thick so that made my bow tie nice and fluffy.
::: It had a frayed edge so I cut that off, as well as the thick seam from the side (as seen in the image above), and I kept the seam to use later.
::: I apologize because this picture doesn't do much justice, but I then folded the top and bottom into the center and then did the same from the left and right.
::: The next step was as simple as hand-stitching my fold in place. Yours can be as ugly as mine-- no one will be seeing it.
::: After that, you'll flip it over and pinch the square together in the center. Then do some more stitching to hold that in place.
::: Remember that seam we set aside at the beginning? That will come in handy now! If you don't have a pre-made seam you can just cut a thin strip of the same fabric and fold it over itself to act as the bow tie center- whatever makes it look prettiest. Then once again we will stitch it in place!
::: Bow tie is done! Now for the strap. I used an old elastic headband, but any elastic will work.
I snipped the headband in one spot so it became an elastic strand, then sewed it to the center of the bow tie.
::: Now we will just need to be able to button the elastic together so it will stay around some good-looking mans neck. ;)
I took the very end, folded it over on itself just slightly, and snipped a little slit in it for the button to fit through.
Lucky for me, my thrifted skirt also had a perfect button on it! So I snagged it. And sewed it on to the opposite end of the elastic. This fit my hub's neck perfectly, but depending on your man's size, you may to to be strategic about where you cut the slit and add the button.
::: And Voila! Here is the bow tie, and here is Ben looking snazzy!
