Baby Decor DIY- Sweet little yarn letters

A couple neighbors of ours just had babies, so what better way to welcome the little ones than with a sweet little gift! This is one of the gifts I made for a new baby girl named Ilse. Isn't it just so sweet :)

It was fairly simple to put together- I just bought some wooden letters, some yarn and some glue from a craft store and the rest is pretty simple to figure out. I will say, though, that there is definitely an easy way and a hard way to do this DIY and that is what I will be sharing with you.

To start, make sure you have a good glue. I used "Tacky" glue that I thought was for fabric but turns out it's not. It worked well once it dried but it took a lonnnng time to dry and wouldn't hold for anything until it had some air time. If I were to do this again, I would go for hot glue!

Originally I thought only one layer of yarn would do it, but I found out quickly that was just not true.
As you can see in this picture, only one layer left a lot of gaps and slippage between yarn strands.

So what I did was one yarn layer then flipped the letters each over and lined some glue on the yarn to hold the first layer in place.

Then I just went through and repeated the first step with a second layer of yarn. And the second layer made such a difference! The first yarn layer made the second layer stay in place much better and the simple filling in of the gaps was great.

Also, I wanted to say, that if you're planning on having the letters stand up on their own, your going to want to try to avoid wrapping yarn around the bottom of them- unless they're big enough to support themselves.

Here's the final product in gift basket form!
